If everything is gift from God (and it is), that means there is nothing we can do all by ourselves. We need God…we can’t even take our next breath without His giving us the ability to do so. We need to give Him thanks….for everything. He deserves it.
“God bless America!” It’s a commonly used phrase. What about thanking Him for those blessings?
Giving thanks to God gives us a healthy sense of our dependence on Him. This is acknowledged by our Founding Fathers. Here is an excerpt from President George Washington’s Proclamation of Thanksgiving Day issued n 1789:
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness…
God is never outdone in generosity.
O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
