The President at the Olympics

I’m not sure whether or not President Bush should have gone to China because of all the blatant human rights violations by the government—forced abortions and sterilizations, one-child-policy, suppression of religious freedom.

But he did attend Sunday service at a church (albeit a state-approved church) and commented on religious freedom. In his interview with NBC’s Bob Costas, he said that it was a chance to show that “religion won’t hurt you, you ought to welcome religious people.” And “it gave me a chance to say to the government, why don’t you [recognize] the underground churches and give them a chance to flourish?”
