St. Juan Diego was a simple Native American man. He thought himself to unworthy to be a messenger for the Mother of God; that is why she appeared to him. (How sweetly Our Lady must have smiled at Juan Diego’s humility!) God chooses the weak and makes them strong. St. Juan Diego reminds us that our weakness is no obstacle for God to work in us. Today’s first reading at Mass reminds us of the same:
“I am the LORD, your God,
who grasp your right hand;
It is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I will help you.”
Fear not, O worm Jacob,
O maggot Israel;
I will help you, says the LORD;
your redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.”
-Isaiah 41
