Quick thoughts on St. Matthew’s Day

Amazingly great news everybody! Jesus Christ came for sinners, not the righteous. I don’t know about you but that means I’m in great company. He came that we might not persist and perish in sin, the wages of which is death, but that we would live in him by his grace and mercy. Really, it’s about recognizing that we need a doctor, just as the apostle and evangelist St. Matthew did. Jesus called him from being a rotten tax collector who took advantage of his own people… Jesus was passing by, not by chance because nothing is ever by chance with Jesus, and he called him and Matthew got up and followed. And after that, he even threw a big party and invited his friends to meet Jesus. St. Matthew knew that he was a sinner and that he was sick and needed a doctor, the only one who could possibly cure him. In recognizing his situation, he accepted that he needed medicine, the antidote to the sickness, the antidote which is the precious blood of Christ. What a blessing it is to go to confession and avail myself of free medicine injected into my soul and poured out all over me… It’s not scary and the pain is only the good kind. If St. Matthew can be so transformed into an apostle of Jesus Christ who recorded his words that we might encounter Jesus through them, then there is hope for all of us!
